My story
Hi I’m Issie, I’m a 20 year-old swimmer studying astrophysics at the University of Waterloo while swimming on the varsity swim team. Since I was little, I've absolutely loved swimming, especially open-water swimming. I grew up all over the world, but I always came back to paradise in Penticton in the summer to swim in the beautiful lakes and spend time with my grandparents. I was always inspired my my grandpa, who completed two Ironmans, to push myself to do hard things.
When my grandma, Joan Wickett, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, I knew that I wanted to use my passion for swimming to bring awareness and fundraise for this disease that affects so many people. She sadly passed away in 2022, so I created Issieswim4alzheimers to fundraise for Alzheimers disease through swimming. My goal is to attempt an ultra distance solo open-water swim, every few years, in memory of my grandma.
I have currently raised just under $16 000 in total, through two open water swims, and I hoping to raise more. I am working directly with the Alzheimers Society of Canada, where we have set up a fundraiser that lets you donate directly to research needs. This summer I will be attempting to swim from Kelowna to Penticton in Lake Okanagan ( approximately 55km).
